Types of Lingerie: A Complete Glossary
April 20, 2026
Walking into the lingerie world for the first time can feel like learning a new language. Bodysuit, teddy, babydoll, chemise, they all sound similar but each one has a distinct shape and purpose. Here's our complete glossary of the pieces we make at Fancy Sinner, so you can shop with confidence.
Bralette
A soft, unstructured bra without underwire or padding. Bralettes prioritize comfort and a natural shape. Perfect for everyday wear, lounging, and small-to-medium busts. Most pair beautifully with matching panties for a casual lingerie set.
Bodysuit
A one-piece garment that covers the torso and snaps at the crotch. Bodysuits double as both lingerie and clothing, wear one alone for an intimate moment, or under jeans as a top. The most versatile piece in any lingerie drawer.
Teddy
A teddy is a one-piece similar to a bodysuit but typically more revealing, strappy, lacy, and designed entirely for the bedroom. Think of it as a bodysuit's seductive sister.
Babydoll
A short, loose-fitting nightgown that flares from a fitted bust, usually ending mid-thigh. Babydolls are flirty, easy to wear, and often paired with a matching panty. Great for warm climates and women who prefer flowy over fitted.
Chemise
A slim, slip-style nightgown that hangs from delicate straps. Longer than a babydoll, usually mid-thigh to knee-length, and cut close to the body. Chemises walk the line between sleepwear and lingerie.
Kimono and Robe
An open-front cover piece worn over lingerie or sleepwear. Kimonos are usually shorter and lighter, robes longer and warmer. Both add a layer of drama and are excellent for the unveil moment.
Garter Belt
A waistband with adjustable straps that hold up stockings. Worn over panties, never under. The garter belt is the most theatrical piece in the lingerie world, pure intent, no utility.
Boyshort and Boxer
A panty cut like a short, covering more of the hip and upper thigh. Comfortable, modest, and surprisingly sexy. Pairs especially well with bralettes and bodysuits.
Thong, G-String, and Brazilian
The three are similar but not identical. A thong has a moderate strip in the back; a G-string has a thinner string; a Brazilian sits in between with slightly more coverage than a thong but less than a regular panty.
